Due to cultural and political nature of Iranian 1979 Revolution, the West’s attitude towards Iran underwent a significant change in the post-revolution era. Under the influence of their governments, Western media have adopted a different approach towards Iran which is obvious in their displayed works. Movies and documentaries produced and put on air by these media present a peculiar image of Iran and Iranians.
The present paper employs semiotic analysis to examine 5 Hollywood movies addressing Iran and Iranians and studies the way these media works have represented Iran and its people. The movies selected for analysis are the most famous and influential films produced thus far on the topic of Iran. This research shows that the investigated movies have employed abundance of orientalistic cliché images about Iran and Iranians in their representation.
